Emirates brings autism-friendly travel rehearsal programme to Madagascar airport
Students and families guided through check-in, security and boarding process
DUBAI – Emirates, the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline, has expanded its “Travel Rehearsal” programme to Madagascar with its inaugural session held at Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo.
The initiative is designed to support passengers with accessible travel needs by offering a structured, guided simulation of the complete air travel journey. It allows participants to experience airport procedures in advance, helping to ease anxiety and build confidence before flying.
The programme in Madagascar was delivered in collaboration with airport stakeholders and partners as part of Emirates’ wider accessibility efforts.

First session
The first session in Madagascar was conducted in partnership with Zaz Heureux School, involving ten children with autism along with their families. Participants were guided through each stage of the travel process, beginning with check-in and continuing through security screening, immigration procedures and time spent in the departure lounge. Airport staff and airline representatives provided step-by-step support, answering questions and assisting families throughout the experience. The rehearsal also included luggage pick-up procedures and a meet-and-greet service supported by pre-arranged officers.

A key highlight of the programme was a guided tour of an Emirates aircraft, where participants were able to sit onboard and familiarise themselves with the cabin environment in a calm setting.
Onground support
The initiative was delivered as part of Emirates’ “Accessible Travel for All” approach, aimed at making air travel more predictable and comfortable for neurodivergent passengers. It aligns with the airline’s broader commitment to improving accessibility across its global network.

Oomar Ramtoola, Emirates’ Manager for the Indian Ocean Islands, said the Madagascar session marked an important milestone in reducing travel-related anxiety and improving confidence among neurodivergent travellers. He highlighted the support of Emirates’ Airport Services Management team at Ivato International Airport and other partners in making the session possible. He also noted the airline’s continued commitment to expanding inclusive travel solutions across regions.
Global rollout
Emirates became the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline after more than 35,000 cabin crew and ground staff completed specialised autism awareness training. The training covers understanding the autism spectrum, addressing misconceptions and providing tailored support strategies during travel.

Since April 2025, Emirates Airport Services teams have organised around 40 Travel Rehearsal sessions across airports in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas, in addition to its Dubai hub. These have been conducted in collaboration with local schools, organisations and airport authorities in cities including London, Paris, Dublin, Istanbul, Sydney, Toronto, Delhi, Hong Kong and Accra, reflecting the programme’s expanding international footprint.
